In December 2018 I bought my husband his first record player. It was a pretty basic setup as I wasn’t sure he’d really be into record collecting. I should have known better. Within a month, he upgraded the turntable, bought proper speakers and the number of records we had quickly doubled, then tripled and so and so fourth.
One of the unexpected benefits of his new hobby was the start of a proper cocktail hour. We quickly took to carving out an hour or two after work on Fridays to put our phones away, spin a record, stir up a drink and catch up on the week . It’s increasingly easy to lose track of time down an Instagram rabbit hole so this new routine has been a welcome refuge.
Now that we have a proper record collection going that has expanded exponentially over the past year and a half, we thought it might be fun to start creating some album-inspired libations. One of the first records I added to our collection was Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours.
This first time I heard the album on vinyl was in 2011, shortly after moving to Vancouver. I was having dinner at a friend’s house and we sang along to Go Your Own Way while sipping on wine and enjoying the warm spring breeze. As warmer days are once again on the horizon, I thought it fitting to create a cocktail to pair with the album that will surely be getting more air time in the coming months.
