Cocktail Of The Day (because it’s always cocktail hour somewhere in the world). And this week, I do believe the best cocktails hours are taking place in Cape Town, South Africa as over 50 of the world’s best bartenders compete for the title of Diageo World Class Bartender of the Year.
This week’s COTD is dedicated to Canada’s very own bartender of the year- Lauren Mote. Mote is currently kicking ass and taking names in Cape Town as she shows some of the best in business just what she’s made of. Earlier this summer Lauren competed in the Chicago regional finals and was kind enough to share a couple of the cocktail recipes that won her a spot in the world finals. Cheers to you Lauren! We are so darn proud of you!
Happy Valley Club
Inspiration: The Derby Cocktail.
2.00 oz Bulleit Bourbon, influenced with Apples and Black Tea
0.25 oz Lustau Amontillado Sherry
0.75 oz Benedictine
1 dash Bittered Sling Five-Spice Bitters (cinnamon, cloves, star anise, fennel seed, Szechuan peppercorn); may substitute for Bittered Sling Kensington Bitters
Add ingredients to a mixing glass, add ice and stir until well chilled and properly diluted. Using a julep strainer, pour into an antique gold-rimmed high coupe, and garnish with a wee golden horse pick holding a cherry and orange peel (As I do not have a gold-rimmed coupe or a golden horse pick, I used reasonable substitutes I had on hand. But if you do happen to have these items, do it up right!).
